LaZrPlastique® Is NOT PRK: Pioneering the Future of Laser Vision Surgery

Why LaZrPlastique® Is NOT PRK: Redefining the Future of Laser Vision Surgery

By Dr. Arun C. Gulani — Innovator, Educator, Vision Architect

Despite being one of the first eye surgeons to perform LASIK — long before most surgeons in the United States — thanks to my international surgical privileges and having consistently delivered better than 20/20 vision for my patients with my customized LASIK techniques, I continued to evolve refractive surgery.

My vision was to move beyond the limitations of conventional techniques and create a safer, flapless, no-cut approach that could be universally applied — including in irregular corneas and so-called “non-candidates” — while also correcting LASIK complications being referred to me from around the world.

This evolutionary journey led to the birth of LaZrPlastique® — a proprietary surgical philosophy that redefines surface laser vision correction through precision, customization, and universal applicability.

🧠 Not Marketing — A Surgical Specialty

It is important to clarify that the very term LaZrPlastique® was never created as a marketing gimmick. In fact, it would have zero value in advertising. Unlike commercial phrases such as “Super LASIK” or “HD LASIK,” which are often invented to sell procedures, LaZrPlastique® was coined to define a distinct, advanced surgical specialty for eye surgeons and industry within refractive surgery, raising the bar for the entire field.

This technique represents a paradigm shift, not a sales slogan — built over decades of clinical innovation and results.

🧪 LaZrPlastique® Corrects PRK Complications — Because It Isn’t PRK

Over the years, LaZrPlastique® has been used to successfully correct complications from PRK surgeries performed elsewhere — including post-operative haze, regression, irregular astigmatism, and suboptimal vision.

This fact alone is telling: a procedure cannot fix itself. The ability of LaZrPlastique® to rehabilitate failed PRK cases proves that it is not simply “PRK by another name” but rather a distinct, scientifically advanced surgical approach capable of solving problems beyond the reach of traditional methods.

🧠 The Core Misunderstanding

For decades, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) has been considered the default surface-based alternative for patients not eligible for LASIK. Because both PRK and LaZrPlastique® involve the corneal surface, some mistakenly assume they are the same.

To equate LaZrPlastique® with PRK simply because both involve surface laser application is like comparing a Bugatti to a Toyota — yes, they both have four wheels and a steering wheel, but that’s where the similarity ends.
Or, to take it a step further, it’s like calling Michelangelo’s David “just a block of marble.”
The tools may appear similar on the surface, but the vision, planning, precision, and artistry behind LaZrPlastique® place it in an entirely different league.

🔬 PRK: The First Generation of Surface Laser Surgery

PRK, developed in the late 1980s, involves:

  • Mechanical or chemical removal of the corneal epithelium.
  • Uniform Excimer laser ablation based on fixed nomograms.
  • Epithelial healing over many days, often with significant discomfort.

While PRK has its place, its limitations are inherent:

  • Pain and discomfort during epithelial healing.
  • Delayed visual recovery over days or weeks.
  • post-operative haze, especially with higher corrections.
  • Regression, particularly with higher prescriptions.
  • Limited customization, as treatments are machine-driven, not patient-specific.
  • Biomechanical unpredictability in cases from non-tailored tissue removal.

✨ LaZrPlastique®: A Scientific, Surgeon-Driven Philosophy

LaZrPlastique® represents a paradigm shift in both technique and thought. It is not defined by the laser machine, but by the surgeon’s diagnostic insight, optical design, and surgical artistry.

Key distinctions:

  • 🧠 Patient-specific optical planning, factoring in anatomy, optics, prior surgeries, and visual goals.
  • ✍️ Custom ablation profiles, energy patterns, and depths — no reliance on generic nomograms.
  • 💻 Advanced diagnostics used not just to treat the surface, but to reconstruct and coherently realign the entire optical system.
  • 🔬 Biomechanical respect — tissue is optically reshaped with precision, not removed indiscriminately.
  • 👁 No flap, no cut, no pain — with rapid visual recovery and minimized inflammatory response.
  • 🔗 Can be combined with Intra-Ocular Lens based and even Corneal Surgeries.

🧠 Clinical & Scientific Differences

Parameter PRK LaZrPlastique®
Concept Procedure Proprietary surgical philosophy
Planning Nomogram-driven Surgeon-driven, optical design
Tissue Removal Uniform ablation Tailored patterns, frequency & energy
Pain Moderate to significant Minimal to none
Healing Time Days to weeks &months  Days
Visual Recovery Delayed, fluctuating Early, often immediate
Haze Common Rare to none — controlled optical plan
Regression Documented risk None; stable structure
Customization Limited Infinite; each case unique
Applications Routine eyes Routine & Complex (RK, Corneal scars, LASIK failures, PRK haze, Keratoconus, Irreg Astigmatism)
Future Surgical Options Can be limited Preserved — minimally interventional

🌍 A Tool for Both Normal and “No-Option” Eyes

LaZrPlastique® has been successfully applied to:

  • Radial Keratotomy eyes with extreme irregularities
  • 👁 LASIK & topography-guided failures
  • 🌫 Corneal scars / irregular astigmatism
  • 🦢 Thin corneas including Keratoconus previously turned away
  • 🌍 Normal eyes often aiming for vision beyond 20/20

It is both an upgrade for routine refractive surgery and a lifeline for complex eyes and complications that have exhausted conventional options.

🏁 Conclusion: Precision Over Procedure

LaZrPlastique® is not PRK — not by concept, not by science, not by outcome.

While both involve surface laser applications and Excimer lasers, the planning, execution, healing profile, biomechanical respect, optical goals, and clinical power are fundamentally different.

It is a surgical philosophy born from decades of innovation, designed to push the boundaries of what’s possible in vision correction — for every eye with Safety as the backbone, from the simplest to the most complex.

LaZrPlastique® is not a rebranding. It is a refractive surgical specialty, capable of achieving what other procedures cannot.
