LASER “ERASER”: Clearing Corneal Scars

Created on: Thursday, September 19, 2019

rnrnThe cornea is the front clear window of the eye and comprises of 5 layers. The shape of this cornea determines the visual error (glasses prescription) for each individual person.rnrn rnrnTherefore eyes with very curved (steep) corneas are myopic (nearsighted), those with flat corneas are hyperopic (farsighted), and football-shaped corneas are astigmatic.rnrn rnrnA healthy cornea is clear and transparent. This is essential for good vision and therefore any loss of transparency from minimal haze to scarring can decrease the vision in that eye.

LaZrPlastique™: The NextGen LASIK surgery

Created on: Monday, September 16, 2019

Last month, the Wall Street Journal carried a major story on pain and dryness after LASIK surgery warning the local consumers blinded by Lasik deals, “cookie-Cutter”, “One size fits All” LASIK techniques , it is apt that my most important advice and dictum in the world of Lasik be served again.rnrnHaving interviewed all over the nation in different news media, I shared my concerns over the article and educative points for consumers therein, as also for Lasik surgeons.rnrnFirst and Foremost, Lasik is a very successful surgery and millions have been safely executed worldwide. It is imperative though for consumers to understand that LASIK is only one among 20 different Laser Vision Techniques among nearly 40 different Vision Corrective techniques (surgeries to get rid of glasses and contact lenses) among innumerable combinations and permutations. So don’t ask for LASIK, ask for what procedure and technology is right for you.

Can our Floaters, Float away?

Created on: Saturday, September 14, 2019

Eye floaters; we all have it, well nearly all of us.rnrnFloaters are those very annoying, small moving spots that appear in your field of vision. They may be especially noticeable when you look at something bright, such as white paper or the blue sky or like I mention to patients “when you are looking at nothing”! Because when you look at nothing, you tend to see imperfections inside your eyes.rnrnSo effectively, these floaters could have entertainment value for those of us who are bored with nothing much to do since they do have interesting shapes and flow.rnrnAlright, lets get serious.rnrnThe back of our eye is filled with a clear, jelly like substance called Vitreous. This is made of numerous collagen fibers which with age (and especially if you are nearsighted or have had eye surgery), shrink and accumulate in this vitreous to cast shadows on the retina thus blocking light coming in along that path (hence shadow). So floaters are usually caused by small protein particles called collagen.

TELESCOPE in the Eye !

Created on: Friday, September 06, 2019

US FDA recently approved a miniature Telescope lens implant for patients with end stage Macular degenerationrnrnLets revisit the anatomy of the ye in relation to this breakthrough innovation.rnrnThink of the macula as the most sensitive part of the retina. I like to explain the retina as the “Film” of the camera. Over time, with age and with other associated factors like genetic preponderance, smoking , systemic diseases including high blood pressure etc, this macular area which is the center of our visual field degenerates and hence affected patients miss the central part of any picture they are seeing. This condition called “Age related Macular Degeneration” or AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the United States of America.

Congratulations! you have CATARACTS.

Created on: Sunday, September 01, 2019

A cataract is the clouding of our natural lens within the eye. Very much like the graying of our hair, a cataract most commonly is an age related change and not a disease.rnrn rnrnVery much like the lens in the camera, you are born with a clear and soft natural lens which over time (with age) becomes cloudy and hard and is now called a CATARACT. Since this cataract was a lens to begin with, it needs to be replaced by an artificial Lens implant.

Football & VISION: The ASTIGMATISM Connection

Astigmatism can be diagnosed during your routine eye exam in most cases but advanced diagnostic technologies like Focused Keratometry , Corneal topography (very much like the earth’s land topography or shape),3 dimensional tomography and refraction (Glasses or contact lens prescriptions) can further detail the specifics towards measurement, type of astigmatism and treatment modalities. These technologies also help rule out any pathology like Keratoconus that may be associated with Astigmatism.
