At Gulani Vision Institute in Florida, we go far beyond offering only Lasik and Cataract procedures. In fact, we offer the full spectrum of laser vision techniques. Dr. Gulani is an innovative eye surgeon, and has developed his own techniques, instruments, and procedures to address the whole spectrum of eye conditions that require glasses or contacts.
Dr. Gulani approaches each eye like a camera and designs a customized plan for each patient’s individual vision goals.
He believes that the very question of “Am I a candidate doctor” is un-warranted. It arises only because most surgeons perform one or two techniques of surgery and hence try and fit the surgery to the patient (Candidacy?).
Dr. Gulani believes that this approach is flawed in that it pre-decides the surgery (due to limited options and abilities of the surgeon) instead of determining what is “Best for the patient”.
Eye surgery to decrease our dependence on glasses or contact lenses and also to enhance existing vision fall under a sub-specialty called Refractive Surgery or Vision Corrective Surgery.
LASIK is just one among over 16 Laser Vision Surgeries (ie. Custom Lasik, Wavefront Lasik, EpiLasik, Lasek, SBLasik, Bladeless Lasik, PRK, ASA etc), which are among 40 Vision Corrective Surgeries and combinations that Dr. Gulani performs.
"I have depicted Dr. Gulani in my painting as the da Vinci of eye surgery for raising vision Surgery to an ART"
- Susanne Scheunke, Internaltional Artist
Armed with so many techniques and technologies, he follows his extensive diagnostic evaluation during his personal consultation with you following which he determines the best technique or even combinations to aim for the best vision for your individual eye.
This is where he has suggested a paradigm shift from "Routine or Cookie-Cutter" to "Customized", raising eye surgery itself to an ART making Vision the accountable endpoint of all eye surgery by intelligently manipulating the interplay of optical components within the eye (Gulani AC : ART of Vision Surgery: 111. SU-80-03. Presented at XXXII World Congress of Ophthalmology & Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany).
You may not be a candidate for the following most common reasons:
1. You may have Thin Cornea, Extreme Nearsightedness, High Astigmatism, Corneal scar etc.
2. You may have had Lasik or some refractive surgery in the past.
3. Also you may be a complication/ side effect or long term anomaly of a previous Refractive surgery.
All of these "Not a Candidate" causes can be effectively addressed as you can see in the choice of surgical options (and combinations) below.
LASIK is a procedure that is performed on the cornea (front clear window of your eye). Dr. Gulani believes that detailed understanding of corneal tissue is of enormous importance. A Lasik surgeon with thorough knowledge and specialized corneal experience will be better able to screen potential patients. This in turn will increase the chances of a successful Lasik outcome and help prevent complications. To that end, he has developed a procedure called Corneoplastique™.
If you have had a previous corneal disease or problem such as corneal scars or pterygium/pinguecula, or any previous eye surgeries such as cataract surgery, Dr. Gulani can use the Corneoplastique™ procedure to prepare your eyes for laser vision correction.
In the event of any complication after a Lasik procedure, Corneoplastique™ can be used to attempt help repair the cornea, reverse the complication, and improve vision.
Phakic IOLs - Implantable Collamer® Lens (ICL) - Visian® ICL is generally seen as an alternative to Lasik or laser vision surgery for the treatment of nearsightedness (myopia). These implants, which resemble contact lenses, are placed between the cornea and the iris (the colored portion of the eye), or just behind the iris.
Dr. Gulani offers Intacs® for treating the progressive disease of keratoconus. When Keratoconus progresses to the point where no other treatment is effective, a corneal transplant may be the best course of action. Dr. Gulani offers this surgery in several ways, using advanced, innovative instruments and techniques.
Astigmatism is a type of blurry vision resulting from an irregularly-shaped cornea. It can occur along with either nearsightedness or farsightedness. Dr. Gulani can treat astigmatism with Advanced Laser Vision Surgery and teaches this to his fellow eye surgeons in seminars and presentations worldwide.
Presbyopia is associated with the need for reading glasses and is caused by the aging of the lens and losing the ability to zoom. Dr. Gulani offers several options to address this problem, including monovision, and the use of multifocal lens implants.
It is important to note that many times patients have a number of symptoms and problems. In many cases, it may require a surgeon with the advanced ability to perform multiple surgeries in order to best treat your vision problems. Dr. Gulani offers comprehensive surgical skills and knowledge to take vision to an art, and provide you with the best options.
